shift from command to market economy=difficult; some prosper w/small businesses, others lost government jobs/benefits/pensions; consumer goods scarce/unaffordable; prices skyrocketed/inflation; led to bartering/black market trade; state run industry to privatization; standard of living dropped; health greatly declined; economic problems are result of soviet control; pollution, oil spills, nuclear waste; bad economy can't fix environmental problems
