The Transcontinental Railroadconsisted of two parts. The eastern part, the Union Pacific, started construction from Omaha and extended 1,087 miles west. It employed primarily Irish immigrants and Civil War veterans. The western part, the Central Pacific, extended east for 690 miles from Sacramento, California.
