The vikings had a very strong naval tradition, which was what made them such great sailors. Their raiding skills came from their prowess with an arsenal of weapons. Their close quarters combat with an axe or short sword was devastatingly fierce. To back that up they sometimes carried a Javelin, and were also skilled with a bow.
