How does thoreau characterize the animals he observes in walden?

He mentions a lot of different animals and explains that although they might seem like "brute neighbors", they live freely and the forest functions as a village. He mentions that otters grow to be as big as little boys, while birds build habitats in trees and mice are different from those in the city.
