The main three causes that helped to cause the 2000s recession were: the Federal deficit, the mortgage crisis and spiking gas prices.

Basically, the amount of money which the US goverment was spending was bigger than the money that it was receiving. In other words, there was too much debt to be paid, therefore it produced the portage crisis and all the problems that came along with it.
