A prokaryote is a unicellular organism that lacks a membrane-bound nucleus (karyon), mitochondria, or any other membrane-bound organelle.

The world "karyon" derives from the Greek κάρυον.

When it is used, as in the world "prokaryote," it means "nut" or "kernel" and refers to the nucleus.
