The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was founded on February 12, 1909 by a group of American multiracial activists, including Ida B. Wells, W.E.B. Du Bois, Henry Moskowitz, Mary White Ovington, Oswald Garrison Villiard and William English Walling.

The NAACP was aimed at promoting equal rights and eradicating the prejudices of caste and race among the citizens of the United States; and supporting the interests of African-American citizens.
