Why do plants need to obtain carbon atoms

Plants use carbon for a handful of reasons, such as using it (and water) to make sugars. They also use it to make food, and they use the energy from the sun to make carbon dioxide into glucose and oxygen. (Carbon dioxide is one carbon atom and 2 oxygen atoms).
