the grand canyon is like a history book because of its deeply carved canyons and the rock layers that the river exposed by weathering over a long period of time which tells a history of the conditions that existed there for exponentially long time for above and below surface.

The Grand Canyon is like a history book because you can see all the layers of rock and dirt throughout the ages, and scientists can read those to tell what happened.
