The Hobbit. In The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit in comfortable middle age at 50 years old, was hired despite his objections as a "burglar" by the wizard Gandalf and 13 Dwarves led by their king Thorin Oakenshield on a quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and its treasure from the dragon Smaug.

He acts at first like a coward and a scaredy-cat because that is what hobbits do. They like to just sit around all day and be lazy and do nothing. In the middle and end of the book he actions lean him more towards fierce and brave.
