Chinampas are important to the Aztecs because they were used to farm. The land where the Aztecs made their civilization wasn't that good for planting, so they made small artificial islands and planted crops on it. Having the river flowing under it helped it grow. Also animals couldn't reach it. Having chinampas supplied them with food/crops
