Carefree

In the beginning Bilbo tells Gandalf that his is "plain quiet folk" with "no use for adventures". The first chapter describes the Baggins' family as having an enjoyable simple ordinary life. These would not lend himself to being bold or brave. Eventually Gandalf convinces him to go on the adventure and he becomes bold and brave, but in the beginning Bilbo is simply carefree.
