Carlos’s family had breakfast at one restaurant and dinner at another restaurant while on vacation. The service during breakfast was terrible and the cost for the meal was $44.50. Carlos’s total bill (cost of meal and tip) was $49.84. The service during dinner was excellent and the cost for the meal was $57.50.

a. What was the percentage of the tip for breakfast?

b. Carlos decided the tip’s percentage for dinner should be 50% more than the tip’s percentage for breakfast. What percent did Carlos give for a tip during dinner?

c. What was the amount of the tip and the total bill (cost of meal and tip) for dinner using the percentage of the tip from part b?

To solve part a, do the following.
49.84-44.50=5.34
5.34/44.50=x/100
after solving the proportion, x would be equal to 12.
To solve part b, do the following.
50+12=62
To solve part c, do the following.
The amount of the tip is:
x/57.50=62/100
which is
35.65
The total bill is:
35.65+
57.50=93.15
