Mother is not a proper noun because it is not what you are calling her. If it said something like, "Mother is the new principle", that would be proper. If I said "my mom" it wouldn't be proper, but if I said "Mom" (as if it were her name) it would be proper.

on 5, there should be a comma before and after "Shannon".
