In Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson. As a reader, what do you gain from the first person point of view? What do you lose?

I haven't read the book, but in anything written in 1st pov, you gain the knowledge, thoughts, and opinions of the main character. you understand their motives and reactions better. though, you lose the advantage of knowing the other characters thoughts, feelings, etc.
