Why did Columbus prevent his soldiers from trading items of little value with native Americans

Christopher Columbus wanted to develop a large, free and open trade between the Spanish Empire and the new world.

He had a keen interest in native riches such as Gold, Silver and native agricultural products that no one had seen before in Europe.
