Herman Schweitzer was hired to managed the Indian Department of the Indian Building by Minnie Harvey Huckel. The Indian Department was created to sell Indian crafts. Herman Schweitzer traveled throughout the Indian Country and procured the best samples of Navajo rugs, jewelry, Pueblo pottery and baskets from tribes in California and along the Colorado River. He enlisted the help of the artists and crafts people to demonstrate and sell their works at the Harvey Hotels in the Southwest. Schweitzer also catered to the demands for non-traditional designs for Navajo rugs and jewelry.
