The short answer here is the fact that they were both fighting for what they thought was right. They both lived different lives but the only difference was wether they should live above someone else just because of their skin color.

Both were overconfident.
Both thought they were in the right.
Both thought that if there was war. War would be over very quickly. Some said by Christmas.
Newspapers said to take D.C. or take Richmond, and the war would be over.
Southerners all thought that they could whip Yankee (backside).
