The light-dependent reaction is one of the two reactions of photosynthesis (other is light-independent) which occurs in the thylakoid membranes of organelles called chloroplasts.

The first one uses the energy of light to make molecules needed for the next stage of photosynthesis. Two molecules produced are the energy storage molecule ATP and the reduced electron carrier NADPH.
