Adipose tissue that surrounds organs in the abdomen is known as visceral (active) fat.
Visceral fat is body fat (adipose tissue) that is stored in the abdominal cavity. It is located around important internal organs such as the liver, pancreas and intestines. An excess of visceral fat is called central obesity and it is often linked to diabetes type 2 and insulin resistance.
