The skeletal movements of muscles are mostly voluntary. That is why skeletal muscle is also called voluntary muscle. Their action is normally controlled by an individual's will.

Involuntary movements occur in these muscles when the nerve impulse passes from a sensory neuron to a motor neuron via an interneuron in the spinal cord. The spinal cord is a long, fragile tubelike structure responsible for carrying incoming and outgoing messages between the brain and the rest of the body.
