When you receive the influenza vaccination, your body thinks that it has contracted the virus and then builds an immunity to the virus. The vaccination trains your body to recognize the flu, or influenza, and your immune system will get rid it before it causes damage (if you were to come in contact with the flu).

EXTRA INFO:
Your shot may not cover all the types of flu, which may be a reason if you contracted influenza after your vaccination.
