How and why did American Indians participate in the American Revolution?

Okay so basically there are many groups of Native Americans, and as you know colonists were expanding through the west. Native Americans tried to stay neutral in the beginning of the revolution, but eventually they started helping the British because they were hoping that they would stop the colonists from taking over any more land.

Native American participation began in the earliest days of the conflict when, in March of 1775, the Massachusetts Provincial Congress accepted an offer from the Stockbridge Indians to form a company of "minutemen" (armed soldiers who promised to be ready in a minute to defend the colonies against the British).
