1/3 of 12 people liked dogs best. One third means you divide by 3(denominator) and then multiply by 1(numerator).
12/3 = 4, 4 * 1 = 4

Multiply total number (12) by the fraction that like dogs (1/3).
=12 total * 1/3 dog people
=(12*1)/3
=12/3
=4 dog people
ANSWER: There are 4 people who like dogs the best out of the 12 surveyed.
