In Macbeth, why was the original Thane of cawdor executed?

The answer is B; he committed treason against king Duncan. In the very beginning of Macbeth we are showed a battle. It shows that the original Thane was trying to kill Duncan and was fighting with the other army. Therefore, the Thane was executed
