You learn that Odysseus is trying to travel back home to his wife Penelope but he is currently trapped on an island with Calypso who is keeping him captive but isn’t until she is informed that unless she lets Odysseus go Zeus will be upset with her and she will be in trouble with him.

The introduction actually reveals a lot about the character of Odysseus. It says that he was king of Ithaca and that he went to fight in the Trojan war, leaving behind his wife and infant son, Telemachus. Odysseus got lost on his way back, passing through Egypt and the land of the cyclopes (and other regions) before being able to get home (which took him several years to achieve).
