Insects can compromise the interpretation of blood spatter pattern analysis. (They can walk through it or add additional blood patterns to the blood sample image) This misinterpretation could lead to a misread blood spatter analysis which is why only certain experts are hired to cover the issue in crime scene investigation.

The presence of insects at an incident scene involving blood is common. Flies that feed on blood at the scene produce small circular stains known as flyspeck which can be mistaken for alternative bloodstain such as expirated blood, also insects walking through a stain may spread the blood causing small additional stains.
