The author depicts the difficult relationship between nwoye and his father by the description of okonkwos disapproval in nwoye. Okonkwo has spent his entire life trying to escape his fathers “soft” legacy and his son reminds him of everything he hated in his father. Okonkwos subtle comments that compare himself with his sons lack of achievement indicate his disappointment.
