A synonym for a bluish-purplish mark on the skin (bruise) is ecchymosis, ecchymoses. Normally this is a subcutaneous spot of bleeding with diameter larger than a centimeter. Normally similar to a hemetoma, that is commonly caused by a bruise. It can also be defined as the hemorrhagic blotching due to pooling of blood under the skin or mucous membrane.
