Hamilton essential favored a strong central or national government and favored a tariff system that would aid manufacturers who were essentially northern and urban. Jefferson essentially favored a weak central government, more state centered power and favored a tariff system that would aid agricultural producers who were essentially southern and rural. Hamilton's views were embraced by the Federalists and Jefferson's views were embraced by the Democrats.
