Palestinians who had fled to Lebanon after the wars with Israel had upset the fragile balance of politics in Lebanon, which was divided between Maronite Christians, Sunni Muslims and Shia Muslims.  The influx of Palestinians brought many more Sunni Muslims into the mix, and eventually war broke out between Christian and Muslim groups.
