The acid rains occur when sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOX) are emitted into the atmosphere and with the help of the winds and air currents that transport them. The sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides react with oxygen, water, and other chemicals, and they form sulfuric and nitric acids.
