Why is it important for newspapers to understand their readers background knowledge about an event ?

if you write about something that didn't happen, it could attract notice and someone can research it and sooner than later they discover no such thing had happened there for, they wont believe you and will no longer buy you newspaper thinking that you can't tell the truth on a simple subject.
