Hypertrophy of the prostate gland is actually an enlargement of the gland caused by the proliferation of the prostate cells. Because the urethra passes through the centre of the prostate this can compress it and thus affect the flow of urine from the bladder through the urethra to the outside. As a result, urine gets back up in the bladder (retention) which leads to the need to urinate more frequently.
