The answer is A.

Abraham Lincoln won the election for the presidency in November 1860. After several months later when he took the office, he encountered the most severe crisis in the history of America. The southerners had acted on behalf of their previous threats. They had started to leave the Union because of slavery issue so Lincoln promises to the south that if they simply returned to the union, they would be allowed to keep their slaves.
