A disaster is an event that prevents a critical business function (CBF) from operating for a period greater than the maximum tolerable downtime. No matter how great the organizations critical business function is, if there is a disaster it is hard for a company's operations to work smoothly. Though the periods of downtime aren't typically long, it's unknown how long they could be down depending on the criticalness of the disaster that took place.
