arthur is declared King of the Britons when he pulls the sword from the stone. When he and his (adoptive) family are in London for a tournament, his brother Kay forgets his sword. When Arthur goes back to find one, he just pulls the sword out of the stone fairly easily. It was decreed that whoever pulled the sword out of the stone was the rightful king of Briton, so Arthur was coronated shortly after.
