The diaphragm is a sheet of skeletal muscles extending across the ribcage and is located at the base of the thorax. It also separates the thoracic cavity which includes the ribs, heart and lungs from the abdominal cavity. Diaphragm performs a vital function in respiration as once it contracts, the volume of thoracic activity would increase thus air is drawn into the lungs.
