A vision of the horrible treatment that slaves were getting in the Pre-Civil War era. Her novel opened the eyes of many abolitionists in the North.

it was partly inspired by the sorrow she felt after the death of her son, and was made into plays. It was successful in spreading the abolitionist movement and depicted the cruel nature of slavery.
