A woman giving birth undergoes 3 stages of labor The first stage is the longest which may take up to 12 hours. and it involves three phases:

a) the early labor phase-- the time of the onset of labor until the cervix is dilated to 3 cm.

b) active labor phase—labor continues until cervix is dilated to 7 cm, and.

c) transition phase – continues until the cervix is fully dilated to 10 cm.

Assessment finding that would suggest that the pregnant client has completed the first stage of labor is when her cervix is completely dilated to 10 cm.
