Developed by the Swedish botanist, Carl Linnaeus, binomial nomenclature (fancy term for scientific names for organisms) is used in science as a universal name.
Because there are different scientists that work in the same field that may not speak the same language or may not have the same common name for an organism, binomial nomenclature is a way for them to clearly communicate with one another.
For example, "Puma concolor" is also known as a Mountain lion, cougar, panther, catamount & puma. That could be very confusing to identify the specific species to someone who does not speak English or isn't aware of the common slang for the animal.
