This period of trade was known as the Canton System. The Qing Dynasty generally regulated trade with foreign countries such as Great Britain until the nineteenth century. Merchants during this time were subject to Chinese law and punishment. As trade with foreign countries began to increase rapidly, China began to increase trade regulations to prevent out influence and plunder of China and its natural resources. These increased regulations upset Britain, who eventually went to conflict in the 1800s.
