Minnesota had deep fertile soils suitable for wheat farming. Settlement and farming of wheat increased and by the end of 1800 Minnesota was the leading wheat producer in the United States.
Wheat wa the principle crop around 150 years ago, It gave rise to companies like General Meals, Pillsbury, and Cargil. 1970 Nobel Laureate, Norman Borlaug statue stands in U.S capital as a tribute to the University of Minnesota Scientist who developed high yielding and disease resistant wheat strains that heped feed the world.
