This reaction is known as Hydrogenation of Unsaturated Fatty Acids. Also well known for converting Oils into Fats. When Oleic Acid is treated with Hydrogen molecule in the presence of metal catalyst i.e. Pt, Ni etc, it adds Hydrogen molecule across double bond and convert it into saturated single bond and forms Stearic Acid.
