"Mandates" entrusted by the League of Nations to be administered by the countries that had prevailed in the Great War.

The League of Nations was formed in the aftermath of World War I, and lands in the Middle East, Africa and Asia that had been under German or Ottoman control were placed under mandate governments. Mostly these mandates were governed by Britain, France, and Belgium, with some participation also by Australia and New Zealand (affiliated with the British).
