The waves that are present in deep ocean are longitudinal waves and the waves on the surface are referred to as surface waves in which particles undergo circular motion. The surface waves are neither transverse nor longitudinal. The shallow water waves include the tidal waves which are formed by the gravitational attraction of the sun and the moon and blowing winds while seismic waves are caused due to the earthquakes inside the ocean. The internal waves are formed when there is a disturbance between two water masses having different density.
