During World War I, why were the Germans unable to finish the war on the western front?

One of the main reasons why the Germans were unable to finish the war on the western front during World War I is because they faced another battle on the Eastern Front. In fact, Germany's position in the "middle" of Europe made it particularly hard to focus on just one "front".
