What effect did the man's frozen hands have on his survival? (in "to build a fire")?

The man's frozen hands were one of the reasons he did not survive. The dexterity in his hands was severely impacted by the freezing cold. He was unable to hold the matches steady. This made it difficult for him to light the fire and have reserve matches in case the fire went out.
