The name monocot (or monocotyledons) and eudicot (or dicotyledons) are derived from the differences in the number of cotyledons (seed leaf).

Both are the groups of the flowering plants.
Monocots include most of the bulbing plants and grains, such as corn, bamboo, bananas, rice, garlic, ginger, grass, lilies, onions, orchids, tulips.
Dicots include many of the most popularly grown garden flowers and vegetables, including the legumes, the cabbage family, and the aster family, such as apples, beans, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, peaches, peppers, potatoes, roses, tomatoes.
