The components of the second line of defense against microbes may be characterized as responders to invasion. It is a non specific resistance that destroys invaders in a generalized way without targeting specific individual cells; For example, phagocytic cells ingest and destroy all microbes that pass into body tissues. The first line of defense on the other hand, includes intact skin, mucous membranes, sebum, tear, among others.
